My last blog entry involved my inability to see any Chinese characters on my computer. All that I was able to see were groups of 4 numbers enclosed in a box. That problem seems to have been solved with the help of Wikipedia. It seems that the free downloadable language packs designed by Microsoft for Windows 98 and NT also work for Windows XP, without the installation CD being needed. The only problem was that Microsoft didn't bother telling anybody. Wikipedia even provided the download links from Microsoft. Well, I wonder how many computers will still be using a Microsoft operating system 50 years from now.

Isn't Microsoft Wonderful!
While this computer that I bought last summer has no trouble with the English alphabet, or the Hebrew one for that matter, it runs into difficulties when it comes across Chinese characters. They just show up as blocks with numbers in them. I tried going into the Control Panel and clicking on Regional and Language Options, but then I kept getting prompts for a Windows XP Home Edition CD, which I of course don't have, since XP was already installed in the computer when I got it.
So far, I haven't been able to find the needed files on the Microsoft Download site, and Microsoft now charges $49.00 to deal with a technical support question. I just added a new topic in the MSFN forums, so perhaps some help will come from there.
