This is a video of an interview with serial killer Paul Bernardo which took place about a year ago. The man in the centre wearing the white sweatshirt is probably the most notorious serial killer in Canadian history, but he comes across simply as a common garden-variety sleazebag. A similar observation was made after Adolf Eichmann had been captured by the Israelis. Despite all of the eye-witness testimony of all the monstrous deeds that Eichmann had done, in prison he looked more like a clerk than a mass murderer.

That's the real danger - serial killers, predators - people truly believe they can tell a dangerous psychopath from their next door neighbour. Oh no...Oh no you cannot. This is what they do, they work hard, very hard at being banal.
ReplyDeleteLmao! I'm sorry... I have to laugh at how angry he is about them calling him a liar. "Call me a psychopathic, sadistic, serial killer- but do not call me a liar!!!" Yes, sociopaths/psychopaths are the guys (or girls) next door who are very capable of fitting in with society. Ted Bundy worked with law enforcement- he even had a hand in investigating his own crimes. Gacy did children's parties dressed as a clown- he was considered a pillar of his community and highly respected by many people. He was charged with killing 26 women, and that is just the ones he was charged with. Female serial killers get less publicity because usually the deaths they cause are of people they know and in a majority of cases the weapon of choice is poison. Serial killers are extremely frightening sociopaths and thankfully only 1% of the sociopath population- they blend in with the community well, they study human emotions and "normal" peoples' minds to understand how to live in day to day society and they play their part extremely well, much better than the other 99%, but they have an agenda to keep and it wouldn't do to let on they have no empathy or compassion.
ReplyDeleteThankfully a good majority of them have big egos, as they themselves are all they truly know. The ego is usually what gets them caught. I've not had the opportunity to study Bernardo much, most of the extreme sociopathic behavior I have studied is in the US. I will have to research him and find out more. Thank you for sharing this.
I lied... I have studied him. I didn't realize he was "Ken" in the "Barbie and Ken" murders. Here's a link to more information about him. http://www.trutv.com/library/crime/serial_killers/notorious/bernardo/index_1.html
ReplyDeleteI didn't think so either by looking at this clip, but the sight you offered Becky reminded me that I read one of the books...good grief, this one is a Doozy!
ReplyDeletePaul Bernardo/"I am a human being"
ReplyDeletePffft. Now there's a contradiction in terms.
